this dissertation investigates the interchangeable use of three discourse items -aí, daí and então 'so, then' -in contexts of sentence combining to express causality (in the referential domain -Sweetser, 1991), thus placing this research within the framework of sociofunctionalism (Naro & Braga, 2001).The data were extracted from 48 sociolinguistic interviews with natives from Campo Grande (the capital of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul) and 48 with paulistanos (natives of the city of São Paulo, part of the project SP2010: Construction of a Sample of Paulistano Speech). These samples are stratified by the speakers' sex/gender, age group (20-35; 35-59; 60 or older) and level of education (High School or College). After describing the grammaticalization trajectory of these three forms, the dissertation examines the factor groups that correlate to their variable use. These are: discourse sequence (narrative, descriptive, expositive, argumentative), information status (old, new, inferrable), topic gradience (intratopic, intertopic), lexical aspect (duration, telicity, dynamism) and grammatical aspect (perfective, imperfective, resultative, indeterminate). The analyses reveal that então is similarly preferred in both cities (while it's slightly more frequent in São Paulo, such difference is not statistically significant). This form is also favored among college-lepvel speakers, in both cities, which suggests that it is possibly evaluated as the most prestigious of the three forms (following the initial hypothesis, based on traditional grammars such as Cunha & Cintra, 2001).However, there is no correlation between sex/gender and this variable. This is contrary to the expected tendency for women to prefer então -the more prestigious form. This fact allows for a debate, when it comes to discourse variables, around the concept of prestige.Furthermore the variables selected in the analysis of each sample were not exactly the same: level of education and grammatical aspect are statistically significant for both, but age group was selected for São Paulo (but not for Campo Grande), while discourse sequence was selected for Campo Grande (but not for São Paulo). In São Paulo, então is disfavored by the speakers of the intermediate age group, which can be interpreted as an indication of change in the social value of aí and daí.Overall, the results show indicate that, although então is the preferred form, it is conditioned differently in the communities
