The Scope of Regional Ethnology

Introductory Note: This paper is an adaptation of a lecture under the same title delivered at the Symposium on Regional Ethnology organized by the Welsh Folk Museum on 31 October-3 November 1972. The Symposium was probably the first serious attempt in these islands to try to reach an outline definition of regional ethnology, and to seek improved co-ordination between the various methods of approach to this developing subject. Various contributors discussed the scope, approaches to collection and study, archiving and documentation, and the academic position.The paper printed here is an interim attempt at definition in the light of the historical development and current range of approaches to the study of regional ethnology in Europe. The need to seek for boundaries, however broad, between regional ethnology and closely related subjects like sociology, social anthropology, and history, as a basis for a working and workable approach—especially within institutional contexts—is the primary consideration
