The Fabric of Their Lives

For more than a century, archaeological traditions and patterns of interaction within the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico have been defined largely on the basis of pottery and architecture. For example, black-on-white pottery and above ground houses equal “puebloan.” Textiles,however, tell a different story, and an important one. In textiles, we can identify two broadly defined areas of related archaeological traditions prior to about A.D. 1200, one above the Mogollon Rim and the other below. Given this foundation, we can find new perspectives on those who lived below the rim, both before and after European contact.AbstractPor más de un siglo lastradiciones arqueológicas y los patrones de interacción en el sutoestede los Estados Unidos yen el norte de México sehandefinido en gran parte en base de la cerámica y de la arquitectura. Por ejemplo, la cerámica negra sobre blanca y las casas sobre la tierra son sinónimos de tipo poblano. Los textiles, sin embargo, nosmuestran algo diferente e también importante. Por medio de los textiles podemos identificar dos regiones anchamente definidas de tradiciones arqueológicas relacionadas antes de d.C. 1200, una encima del Rim de Mogollon y la otra abajo.
