At the beginning of the Holocene, the Euphrates valley experienced its last cycle of geomorphological evolution whose origin was mainly climatic. An alluvial formation filled up the bottom of the valley, basically modifying the possibilities for human occupation and land exploitation. The evolution of land use and human settlement may be observed in major phases, from the earliest Neolithic settlements of the 9th millennium along the edges of the valley, to the Chalcolithic villages built on the banks of the river. Gradually agricultural development could - or should - leave the narrow beds of the tributary wadis to spread for a more durable period to the Holocene floor, made accessible by the cutting of the river across the alluvial formation. Absolute dating for the stages of occupation of the valley floor are still lacking, but archaeological data have led to definition of the main outlines
