Delinquency in Sweden

The proportion of youth involved in delinquency has remained relatively constant in Sweden over the past few years but with a small proportion accounting for an increasing number of offenses. A comprehensive review of Swedish Delinquency research is offered. That research suggests that the pattern of delinquency observed in Sweden is the result of a combination of greater opportunity to commit crime and weaker social controls. The process by which these factors impact delinquency is discussed in terms of patterns of role relationships. Delinquent youth are most characterized as having a high degree of physical independence (choice) to interact in a limited number of roles (scope). Given the absence of other social and personal responsibilities, there is a high degree of frequency of interaction with the peer group. The lack of inter-generational group overlap increases the viability of the peer group's definition of the situation. While the social system can physically manipulate the opportunity structure, the need exists to deal with the social integration of youth, the differential impact of parenting styles and, in general, the emancipation and emotional needs of youth.
