Liberalism and the Idea of Toleration

The classical liberal idea of toleration is now under fire from every party in our community: republicans worry that the indiscriminate practice of tolerance weakens the civic and moral virtues that are necessary for self-government; democrats suspect that the idea of toleration is merely on apology for inequality and repression; and communitarians as well as postmodernist liberals argue that the stingy understanding of the idea of toleration that now prevails does not do justice to the diversity of our community. In this paper, I reconsider the liberal case for toleration, in the light of such doubts, for friends of liberalism must fear that as we forget the good reasons for our policy of toleration we shall sooner or later lose the respectable habits of tolerance as well. I defend the classical liberal settlement (among liberals, democrats, and republicans) that constitutes our liberal regime; I argue that each party to that settlement, and especially the liberals, must be ready to make concessions to the just claims of the other partisans
