A Saint-Simonian in the Republic

Eugene Pelletan and the ideological transformation of nineteenth-century French republicanism

The political thought of Eugene Pelletan illustrates the richness of French republican ideology during the latter half of the nineteenth century. Although his writings were generally dismissed as expressions of utopianism, his works had little to do with naive optimism, but rather offered a sophisticated republican doctrine which operated at different levels of discourse simultaneously. Generally Pelletan's political ideas show that the traditional dichotomy between the 'idealism' of 1848 and the 'positivism' of post-1871 republicanism is easily overplayed. His own brand of republicanism comfortably transcended this generational cleavage, thereby drawing out essential elements of continuity in nineteenth century French political thought. In this context our most remarkable finding is the scale of Pelletan's intellectual commitment to Saint-Simonism. This points not only to the complex nature of French republican ideology, but also to the richness of Saint-Simonism, a system of thought whose significance in later nineteenth century French political thought has yet to be fully appreciated
