Most studies of media coverage of elections focus on campaign coverage and stop at election day. In this article, the process by which national election results are interpreted by news media is examined. This process is one in which news media rely heavily on competing sources inside Washington whose interpretations are calculated to maximize their political advantage in the postelection political environment Ultimately, a "conventional wisdom" emerges about die meaning of the election that gives political actors a common understanding of political reality on which to base their interaction. The "winning" interpretations may not be the only plausible interpretations of the election, but will be those most vigorously promoted by their supporters inside Washington. In 1988 the dominant interpretations emerging from news coverage of the postelection period were that the president‐elect had no mandate to lead Congress and that the Democratic party lost because its message was too liberal
