J. G. A. Pocock's methodological proposals for studying the history of political thought have received considerable attention. In this article, David Boucher examines Pocock's use of the idea of paradigms in building a theory of the linkages between language and political action. He suggests that inner contradictions in Pocock's theory weaken its conclusiveness
