The US public consistently reports that civility is important to a successful democracy (Allegheny College/Zogby 2016)—yet incivility in politics is quite commonplace on television, in comment sections, and in presidential addresses. Why this clash between what citizens say they want and the prevalence of incivility in our political discourse? Some, including Mutz (2015), suggest that partisan identity affects incivility perceptions, with members of the public believing that members of their in-group party behave with more civility than members of their out-group party. Others, including Kenski, Coe, and Rains (Forthcoming), have more recently examined how personality traits (e.g., the Big Five) may influence incivility’s effects.
