Pierre Bourdieu (1930–2002) is one of the most influential social scientists in the world today. He developed his relational and praxeological approach to the social world through empirical investigations of an impressive variety of phenomena, whose structure and operation he captured by means of concepts such as habitus, practice, field, capital, and symbolic violence. At the metatheoretical level, Bourdieu's conception of sociological knowledge involves a relational epistemology that construes the scientific objects of sociology as structured spaces of positions. At the level of substantive theory, his “genetic structuralism” grasps the dialectical interplay between the objective and the subjective dimensions of the social world so as to apprehend both as socially generated and socially generative. The historical dialectic between objective positions and subjective dispositions also fosters a theory of how structures of domination and inequality come to be perceived as the natural order of things and are thus historically reproduced. Finally, when applied to culture in the broadest sense of the term, Bourdieu's agonistic sociology results in an impressive series of historical and empirical surveys of fields and subfields of competition for symbolic goods
