Academic sociology1 has been in existence in India only for six decades, although sociological thinking and empirical research did exist in India since the 19th Century (see, Dutta Gupta 1972). And since the 1950's discussions on Sociology in, of and for India have been taking place.2 While sociology in India deals with the professional activities of sociologists, the state of the art in the country, discussion on sociology of India concerns itself with approaches to the study of Indian society, as a space-time chunk. In the case of sociology for India, the effort seems to be one of postulating a set of concepts and theories suitable to study Indian social reality. A perusal of the writings on Indian socio logy in all these contexts would unfold that the leading questions posed have been the following
