Freedom Rights is dedicated to the historian Steven F. Lawson, professor emeritus at Rutgers University and the author of such seminal civil rights studies as Black Ballots: Voting Rights in the South, 1944–1969 (1976) and Running for Freedom: Civil Rights and Black Politics in America since 1941 (1991, now in its third edition). Lawson's essay “Freedom Then, Freedom Now: The Historiography of the Civil Rights Movement” (American Historical Review, April 1991, pp. 456–72), adroitly summed up the state of the field at the time and influenced, as the authors attest, a generation of scholars. This essay collection demonstrates just how different, more complex, and more expansive civil rights historiography is twenty years later. From the initial Martin Luther King Jr.–centered, Montgomery-to-Memphis narrative, it now sprawls further in time, place, and themes than ever before. Yet Lawson's own contribution, “Long Origins of the Short Civil Rights Movement, 1954–1968,” provides a timely note of caution about losing sight of what made the 1950s and 1960s such a unique episode within the larger struggle for African American freedom and equality. In so doing, Lawson launches against the current historiographical tide of the “long civil rights movement” that seeks to stress the continuities rather than the differences between the civil rights movement of the 1960s and earlier and later developments
