How E-governance mediates the debt-green energy nexus? Evidence from BRICS+ countries

Green energy adoption is critical for sustainable development, but high levels of government debt may hinder the necessary investments. This study examines the impact of government debt on green energy adoption in BRICS+ countries, using e-governance as a mediating factor. The study employs advanced panel regression techniques such as augmented mean group (AMG), Driscoll Kraay standard error, and System GMM for the time period spanning 2000 to 2020. The results indicate that higher government debt can impede the adoption of green energy, but the implementation of e-governance mitigates this negative effect by improving transparency, efficiency, and accountability in public financial management. Similarly, increased human development and population growth also negatively impact green energy adoption. In contrast, economic growth and globalization positively influence green energy adoption in BRICS+ countries. However, in a country-specific analysis, the impact of government debt on green energy adoption differs in all countries due to their distinct economic, social, and political contexts. This study underscores the importance of robust digital governance systems in maximizing the positive outcomes of public debt and facilitating a successful transition to renewable energy. Policymakers are advised to prioritize e-governance reforms to ensure the effective use of government debt for green energy investments
