The following is an edited transcript of the discussion which followed oral summaries of the six preceeding papers delivered in Phoenix, Arizona on October 21, 1978, at the annual meeting of the Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association. Considerable editing on the transcript was necessary to: eliminate inaudible or garbled portions, excise repetitious or irrelevant statements, make complete sentences of disjointed phrases, clarify ambiguious references, and supply from notes and memory portions not usable from the tape. We have attempted to provide a pertinent and clear discussion of the issues raised by the papers in a form that is articulate and economical, attributing to each participant we could identify from the tape, his or her most pointed statements on the novel or related issues
