So soon after 1989 one already has difficulty in placing the German‐Polish border in its previous Cold War context. The infamous Oder‐Neisse Line between Germany and Poland was conceived as an afterthought by Stalin at the end of the Second World War, in order to persuade his Western allies to allow the Soviet Union to annex large parts of eastern Poland, and was subsequently hotly disputed for the entirety of its existence. Unexpectedly, this central European border has now become the subject of an imaginative attempt to achieve regional integration and a new trans‐national identity
