If, through their denunciations, accusations, or testimony children played an important role in triggering a number of the major witch hunt episodes of the XVI and XVII centuries, they themselves were not always spared repression. On the contrary, although children were long sheltered from legal action due to their lack of judgment, some judges or officers of justice, doubting their innocence, began accusing them of witchcraft toward the end of the XVI century. Based on the conviction that witchcraft was hereditary and that races of witches truly existed as well as on the advice of demonologists affirming that exceptional crimes could be punished by exceptional means, some did not hesitate to judge and condemn young children to capital punishment in the XVII century
