Variability in prehistoric Pueblo fire features is poorly understood, yet often these features are virtually all that remain on occupation surfaces. This article addresses this problem by analyzing the proveniences and associated artifacts of 78 fire features from Chodistaas and Grasshopper Spring pueblos, located in the Grasshopper region of Arizona. The results indicate that circular clay-lined hearths were for cooking, serving, and numerous other activities; rectangular slab-lined hearths were for cooking with much grinding around them; circular unlined hearths were for warmth and light; and roasting pits were for specialized cooking. The patterning of these fire features suggests that Chodistaas was a year-round village and Grasshopper Spring was a seasonal village.
