Reply to Deborah Chay

I read a few pages of it the day it arrived and when I saw what you were attempting to do I put it aside. I was already dealing with enough stress, including the fact that one of my dearest friends was dying of breast cancer, and I decided that reading your essay was one negative experience I could spare myself. At the beginning of March, 1993 I decided to look at the essay again because I recalled that if I was going to write a reply, it needed to be sent to NLH in April. I read your article carefully and made marginal notes and other notes which I would be glad to share with you. I do not have time, however, to write an exhaustive theoretical argument refuting almost everything you have written about my two essays. I did want to state for the record my general response to your article. The bottom line is that you just don't get it. Even though you have obviously examined these two essays intensively, your assumptions about what I intended to do and your understanding of what I actually wrote are completely erroneous. You make dozens of points that are based upon inaccurate suppositions. I will list a few of the most glaring ones here. Your most significant mistake is your not comprehending why I wrote these essays to begin with, what I wanted to accomplish, and most especially what my politics as a Black feminist activist and organizer mean.
