The major objectives of this volume are 1) to identify the salient features of the diversity in patterns of demographic preference and behavior in Egypt and 2) to investigate the way in which social and economic modernization has shaped these patterns and affected the underlying process. The studies presented here draw on the data collected in the Egyptian Fertility Survey conducted in 1980 by the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS). This volume assembles findings of advanced analytical studies about the how and why of patterns of demographic preference and behavior in Egypt using the unusual combination of detailed demographic information along with extensive background data relating to many aspects of the modernization process. The studies presented here are the product of an elaborate research program developed by CAPMAS with the collaboration of the World Fertility Survey and the World Bank. 19 studies by 35 researchers deal with nuptiality and fertility child survival the demand for children and fertility regulation. The development of this volume is basically in 4 parts: 1) chapters 1-5 deal with levels trends and socioeconomic determinants of fertility and nuptiality; 2) chapters 6-9 analyze issues in child survival; 3) chapters 10-13 address various dimensions of the demand for children; and 4) chapters 14-19 examine in detail the determinants of fertility regulation and the impact of modernization on the motivation for fertility control in Egypt. An overview presents a broad summary of the findings of individual studies with their policy implications
