Adolf von Harnack's Answer to a Recently Published Letter of Friedrich von Hügel

In the December issue of JAAR[XLV/4 Supplement (December, 1977), D 1135–1145] a letter of Friedrich von Hugel to Adolf von Harnack was published in an English translation by Gary Lease. The answer of Harnack to von Hugel is preserved as MS 2619 in the von Hugel collection at St Andrews University, Scotland. In his reply Harnack exculpates the sensitive von Hugel of an indiscreteness of expression while discussing Alfred Loisy with him in London in 1911. In the introduction to the letter the earlier history of von Hugel's efforts to have Loisy's commentary Les Évangiles synoptiques reviewed in the Theologische Literaturzeitung is elucidated from the unpublished Holtzmann-Hugel correspondence. Harnack's renewed insistence upon the correctness of his Lucan theories regarding the historical reliability and authorship of Acts is discussed in the context of contemporary scholarship on Acts; and von Hugel's discussion and correspondence with the Berlin church historian are treated in the light of Loisy's reflection on the meeting in his Mémoires.
