The Republic of China on Taiwan experienced another multiparty election in November 1993, the third in as many years. Political parties competed on bread-and-butter issues in the island-wide election for mayors and county magistrates, and continued economic growth remained the ruling Kuomintang's (KMT) most important asset. However, Taiwan had become more and more dependent on the mainland China market. In order to offset this economic dependence, and to co-opt an issue previously monopolized by the opposition, the ROC government made an attempt to rejoin the United Nations
