Development Strategy for Cuyo, Argentina∗

A geographical development strategy is proposed for a two-province government-organized planning region in western Argentina known as Cuyo. Variables which measure economic activity and housing quality are used to classify combinations of departments (counties) as leading or lagging regions. The nodal organization of Cuyo aids in the identification of probable investment centers, and indicates their functional relationships to lagging regions. There are viable investment centers in Cuyo. Increased investment in these urban areas should reduce extreme economic concentration, and create growth and employment opportunity nearer to depressed areas
