The Royal sergeants of medieval France have been little studied up to now. Taking advantage of exceptional documentation on the sergeants of Languedoc, this article seeks to fill in part of this gap. The results raise questions about some commonly held ideas concerning the sergeants : notably relating to their alleged abuses, their excessive numbers and their recruitment in the lowest classes of society
