Indo-Caribbean Social Identity

This article examines the social identity of Indo-Caribbean people. It recognizes that over the last century, Indo-Caribbean people have gradually become creolized in a predominantly African Caribbean. Yet, this represents only one small aspect of Indo-Caribbean social identity. The prevailing view is that Indo-Caribbean people have developed an identity that sets them apart from other ethnic groups in the Caribbean. Indo-Caribbean social identity can be conceptualized at four levels:ethno-local, ethno-national, ethno-trans-Caribbean, and ethno-universal. Interestingly, these identities are not only found in the Caribbean but also in the Indo-Caribbean Diaspora
