Folklore and Literature

IT is my intention today to look back, as I did last year, to recent work published in our journal and elsewhere, to discover the main lines along which progress in folklore studies is being made. The subject of folklore in literature has come well into the forefront in recent issues, and for the first time, to the best of my knowledge, the word folklore has appeared in the English faculty lecture list at Cambridge, where Dr Derek Brewer has been lecturing on 'The Interpretation of Dreams, Folklore and Romance', while the importance of the folk tradition in the work of Chaucer has been recognized in his recent Israel Gollancz lecture 'Towards a Chaucerian Poetic'.' It is necessary to make a distinction here between different methods of approach, for it has long been customary to search for information about folklore in literature: Beowulf's
