It has been thirty-five years since Jean Meuvret, W. G. Hoskins, and B. H. Slicher van Bath called for renewed research in agricultural history at the 1950 International Congress of Historical Studies in Rome.' In France their appeal was taken seriously, and works treating the agrarian history of the early modern period have proliferated. Major contributions by the Annales school and specifically by Pierre Goubert, Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie, Pierre de Saint-Jacob, Jean Jacquart, and Abel Poitrineau have resulted in a new synthesis of sixteenth-, seventeenthand eighteenth-century rural history.2
