For several years college students have been volunteering as companions to chronically ill mental patients. Anecdotal data support the conclusion that the patients derive benefit from this interaction. More systematic data indicate that students undergo an enlargement of their conceptions of mental illness, and at the same time manifest a series of quasi-therapeutic personality changes
