The modern medical centre is responsible for generating new knowledge that elucidates basic biologic processes and their disruption in disease. By virtue of its responsibility for educating future physicians in the optimal application of this knowledge in the care of patients, the medical centre must also establish standards for patient care by providing new insights into the process of patient care. From the standpoint of medical education, research in patient care is necessary to develop criteria by which to validate contemporary programmes of instruction in clinical medicine.
