Soon after receiving "'Fordism' and the French Regulationist School," by Daniel Cataife (MR, May 1989), we asked our friend Joseph Halevi, who was on his way to France, to see if he could obtain an article from Gerard Destanne de Bemis, a leading representative of the research group known as GRREC. The following article is the result. In contrast to other strands within the French regulationist tradition, GRREC distinguishes itself by not relying on the concept of Fordism—critically analyzed by John Bellamy Foster in "The Fetish of Fordism" (MR, March 1988). Readers will find Bemis' article most helpful, in our view, if they can avoid being distracted by abstract references to immutable "laws" under capitalism (such as the "falling rate of profit tendency" and the "tendency toward equalization of profit rates"), concentrating instead on the more concrete role attributed to monopoly, the state, and imperialism in countering and transforming these "laws" in a contemporary capitalist environment. - The EditorsThis article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website
