Measurements of bison carpal and tarsal bones from the Sjovold site (EiNs-4), Saskatchewan, are shown to be bimodal. Thetwo modes are inferred to represent a combined group of adult cows and calves and a group of substantially larger adult bulls. Although the cows and calves cannot be separated without supporting evidence concerning age, the carpal and tarsal measurements can be used to distinguish between representatives. of nursery herds and those of bull herds. Since carpals and tarsals are often. abundant and well preserved in archaeologzcal sztes, they may provide valuable insight concerning aspects of bison paleodemography and procurement
