A Carved Quirt Handle from the Warm Springs Reservation
Northern Plains Biographic Art in the Columbia Plateau

An antler tine quirt collected from the Warm Springs Indian Reservation, shows a mixture of Plains and Plateau traits. Beadwork attached to the specimen is of the Transmontane Style, most often associated with the Nez Perce and other tribes from the eastern Columbia Plateau, although also done by the Crow. Drawings on the antler tine handle mimic almost exactly those drawn by Sioux artists in their winter counts and ledger drawings in the late 1800s. Analysis of the headwork and drawings leads us to conclude that the piece originated with the Sioux and was traded to the Warm Springs reservation in the late Historic period, probably through the hands of Nez Perce and possibly Crow middlemen
