The number of children who appear in the sources for the triumviral period is striking. Antyllus, the elder son of Antonius and Fulvia, is the most visible of a cohort of young people who took part in the politics of the day, mostly as targets of, or instruments for, the strategies of the adults on whom they depended. This paper argues that the unusual, or even experimental, use of children in this brief period was a departure in several important ways from the political use of children in earlier centuries, and it was not continued without alteration under Augustus. What happened to the children of the most important political players of the period is a byproduct of the extraordinary power held by those same men
