Le premier volume porte plus précisément sur la sociologie historique de la guerre, en rapport étroit avec celle de l’État clientélisme étudiée dans ce second volume. Christine Messiant retrace ici l'histoire sociale du MPLA, le mouvement jusqu'à ce jour dominant, pour mieux montrer en quoi ses caractéristiques ont engendré une misère profonde qui rend le clientélisme d'autant plus nécessaire et extrême. Elle montre que la pacification sans démocratisation (1991-2002) a fait place à un multipartisme sans démocratie qui a permis une reconversion économique hégémonique de la nomenklature au pouvoir
