Begun some forty years ago, the project of writing a multivolume history of the working class and the labor movement in Germany from the beginning of the nineteenth to the end of the twentieth century is gradually reaching its conclusion. Following three volumes on the social, economic, and cultural condition of Germany’s lower classes during the first two-thirds of the nineteenth century, written by the distinguished historian Jürgen Kocka, the chronologically earliest part of the series is now completed by a book on the origins of the German labor movement, produced by Kocka’s long-term research assistant, Jürgen Schmidt. In a clearly written work based on an extensive scholarly literature, Schmidt presents a narrative of institutional development; an analysis of forms of organization, sociability, and political action; and a consideration of the links between the nascent labor movement and both socioeconomic trends and broader political developments.
