Normandy and its Neighbours, 900–1250

David Bates has made an unparalleled contribution to the history of Normandy and the Anglo-Norman realm. Throughout his career he has studied the history of the duchy and its aristocracy, exemplified in his seminal Normandy before 1066 (1982; rev. ante, c [1985], 361–3). He has led the way in the study of the complex documentary or ‘diplomatic’ traditions of the period, introducing French charter scholarship to an English-speaking audience through countless articles and, most notably, the publication of Regesta Regum Anglo-Normannorum: The Acta of William I (1066–1087) (1998). For this achievement he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Caen, the highest possible accolade for a historian of Normandy and a tribute to his role (while based successively at universities in Wales, Scotland, and England, including as Director of the Institute of Historical Research at the University of London) as the leading cross-Channel link between historians of France and the British Isles in the central middle ages
