Cities, Texts and Social Networks, 400-1500

This volume of essays was born from a series of sessions at the 2007 International Medieval Congress at Leeds and, in common with other such progeny, has an uneven character. On the whole, however, the editors’ intelligent introduction and several very fine essays recommend it to anyone with a serious interest in urban history. The chief strength of the volume's introduction is that the editors not only describe and critique approaches and debates within medieval urban studies, but they also consider the place of the middle ages in the broader field of urban history. One of their goals is to get beyond the simplifications marking both older medieval urban history and more recent theories of the modern, chiefly by using the critical insights of the latter against the assumptions and conclusions of both. The annotation here is rich, the observations smart, and the broad categories suggested for moving research forward sensible. Those categories structure the volume, which is divided into sections on deliberate construction and reconstruction of the built environment; urban topographies as texts to be read and analysed; the relationship between religion and civic identity; and approaches to the exercise of agency and the mechanisms by which the urban community formed or fragmented
