The Conservation Movement

As commonly applied by professional conservationists and for the purposes of this paper, conservation means development, with wise use or management in the best public interest, of our natural resources of soil, water, vegetation, wildlife, and minerals. It means further the restoration sustained productivity of worn or damaged resources, where possible, and the management and utilization of renewable resources in such manner as guard against depletion. Only in a limited field of activity, including the safeguarding of special reservations such as parks or established wilderness areas, does the connotation of preservation apply an appreciable extent. Otherwise, it might best be summed up as meaning to use without using up. 1
