adoption of fifty-one workmen's compensation laws under which more than $150,000,000 is paid out yearly in orderly fashion on account of occupational injuries. Her progress with mothers' pension laws and with old age pensions has also been rapid after once getting under way. There are indications that in this country a similar rapid advance in social insurance may be expected in the near future in dealing with involuntary unemployment. During this prolonged industrial depression, public interest in social insurance has naturally been centered upon unemployment compensation. This orderly method of protecting wage earners against the devastating effects of joblessness can now no longer be shouted down-as was possible only a few years ago-by the cry of dole! Our painful experience with an American dole system of charity relief, financed for the most part in the hardest possible time by the taxpayer, has convinced thinking people everywhere that henceforth we cannot afford to permit employers to dismiss millions of industrious workers for the public to support until industry needs them again
