British diplomacy remained unscrupulous. Mugabe won the 1980 British-supervised polls, despite Smith's efforts to prevent him from taking power. When incoming election results showed that Mugabe would achieve a landslide victory, Smith desperately tried to encourage the security forces to step in and nullify the election on the grounds that it had been characterized by intimidation, but the services chiefs refused. This betrayal by fellow Rhodesians was apparently the most difficult for Smith to swallow, prompting him to bemoan the existence of traitors working together with your enemies and undermining your foundations from within. It is, perhaps, unreasonable to call this book disappointing, since that would suggest that one had higher expectations. Readers looking for valid, detailed accounts of the political and economic tribulations that Zimbabwe endured during the UDI period will have to search elsewhere. In the meantime, Smith, who lives in the capital city, Harare, continues his farming interests and remains oblivious to the truly great betrayal-the one committed against the African peoplethat rests squarely on his shoulders
