The Making of a Modernist Novel

This article uses experiences and insights gleaned from editing the first volume of the ‘historisch‐kritische Gesamtausgabe’ of the works of Uwe Johnson to demonstrate the ways in which Johnson's first published novel, Mutmassungen über Jakob , written while he was still in the GDR, applies techniques associated with the modernist novel to render the complexities of the Cold War and the fates of those caught up in it. It touches on some of the ways in which ideology has interfered with an understanding of the novel, and it uses the genesis of the text as revealed in the manuscript tradition to show just how carefully Johnson weighed up issues of intelligibility, comprehensibility, and communication. In doing so it draws heavily on John White's work, most notably on his first book on Mythology in the Modern Novel . In diesem Artikel werden Erfahrungen und Einsichten, die der Arbeit an der historisch‐kritischen Gesamtausgabe der Werke Uwe Johnsons zu verdanken sind, dazu benutzt, um zu zeigen, wie Johnson in seinem noch in der DDR geschriebenen ersten gedruckten Roman die Techniken des modernistischen Romans einsetzt, um die Komplexität des Kalten Krieges und der damit verbundenen Schicksale adäquat wiederzugeben.
