This paper will eventually form part of a larger study concerning those periods of Ruben Dario's life which were spent in Guatemala. For the present, however, the writer intends to deal only with the first few months of Dario's initial residence in Guatemala, June 30, 1890 to August 15, 1891. The known highlight of this fourteen-month stay is the expansion of his editorial and literary activities through publication of El Correo de la Tarde. However, since Dario arrived in Guatemala almost six months prior to the establishment of El correo and already had much literary experience and recognition as a writer, one wonders about his activity during these first months. It is well known that he was writing for the Diario de Centro-Ame'rica relatively soon after his arrival. However, El Imparcial, a diario of the same period edited by Augusto Mulet de Chambo, also contains much material concerning him which up to now seems to have been overlooked. This present paper will deal primarily with material found in this publication. El Imparcial was following Dario's activity as a writer almost two months previous to his arrival.
