They offer several reasons for this. Students suggest that analyzing poetry is too difficult for them, that they have never been expected to do this, that they have a knowledge gap. Others, especially young men, have indicated a culturally induced aversion to poetry: studying poetry is somehow sissy. Still others have been turned off, so to speak, by a poetry course they have taken previously, in high school or elsewhere
