WHILE THE IMPORTANCE of Padre Jose Francisco de Isla's Fray Gerundio de Campazas (1758 and 1768) is rarely brought into question, the author's early literary productions are seldom accorded the sympathetic appreciation which works of such value inevitably require. One work which has remained virtually unnoticed in recent generations is Isla's first literary exercise outside the area of translations: La juventud triunfante (1727). Admittedly the work does not attain the creative caliber of later activities, but its significance in relation to the author's over-all production cannot be dismissed
