    In early 1997, the three authors accepted a research contract, funded by the World Bank, to carry out a diagnostico (research and analysis) of the communal land claims of some 130 indigenous, Garifuna, and Afro-Nicaraguan communities on the Atlantic (Caribbean) Coast of Nicaragua.     This article offers an analysis of theoretical models developed around the concept of the African Diaspora. These models either concentrate on essential features common to various peoples of African descent or focus on diaspora as a condition of hybridity characterized by displacement and "dispersed identities."
