  • Remaining anonymous? The offline side of darknet drug vending

Open Access•Thomas Joyce, Manuel Jofré•ARTICLE•European Journal of Criminology•2026

Darknet drug vending is a hybrid crime. Although many activities occur online, the delivery of drugs to buyers requires a shift from the digital to the physical realm. This transition could be considered risky for vendors; while the online side provides anonymity, the offline side may expose vendors to increased opportunity for monitoring, evidence gathering and potential enforcement. This research examines data from 80 arrest cases and 279 news …

  • Convergence Between Migrant Smuggling and Trafficking of Goods

    Open Access•Alberto Aziani, Manuel Jofré et al.•ARTICLE•International Migration Review•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 36

There is debate about the convergence of migrant smuggling and transnational trafficking of goods, the threat it poses to society, and its evolution in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, empirical evidence is limited. We tested for convergence using a methodology based on natural language processing. Results show that convergence occurs, but it is rare and episodic. Exploratory results suggest that COVID-19 containment policies had no im…

  • Bid-rigging in public procurement

Open Access•Carlotta Carbone, F Calderoni et al.•ARTICLE•Crime Law and Social Change•2024

Bid-rigging harms economies and societies. While existing research has primarily focused on quantifying the economic damages resulting from bid-rigging cartels, there is a relative dearth of studies exploring how firms interact and the specific techniques they use to rig tenders. Our paper examines the bidding behaviours associated with bid-rigging. Specifically, we investigate how cartel companies exploit legal opportunities, engage in joint and…

  • Terrorist Financing

Manuel Jofré, Alberto Aziani et al.•ARTICLE•Terrorism and Political Violence•2024

This study examines the use of traditional systems and emerging financial technologies for terrorist financing based on a dataset comprising 121 cases around the world. While there are speculations that terrorists are largely adopting emerging FinTechs like cryptocurrencies, our exploratory findings indicate that only 7 percent of cases involve such technologies. Traditional payment systems are still dominant, accounting for 93 percent of cases. …

  • Covid-19 and Organized Crime

Open Access•Alberto Aziani, Gianluca A Bertoni et al.•ARTICLE•Trends in Organized Crime•2023

The COVID-19 pandemic has created new opportunities for organized criminal groups and confronted them with new challenges. Analysis of how these groups have reacted to the pandemic yields better understanding of how they work and enables the devising of more effective counter-strategies. To this end, we identified illustrative cases regarding the provision of illegal governance and infiltration of the legal economy by conducting a systematic cont…

  • Network analysis for financial crime risk assessment

    Manuel Jofré•ARTICLE•Global Crime•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 1

The present study aims to support existing risk assessment tools by proposing an innovative network-oriented methodology based on ownership information. The approach involves calculating company-level indicators that are then transformed into red flags and used to rate risk. To this end, we collect data on companies active in the division of gambling and betting activities in Malta, and further combine them with information on enforcement actions…

Chile has been under military authoritarian rule since 1973. During this time, new cultural expressions, both rich and complex, have appeared. Now, after 15 years, these developments can be evaluated from a broad perspective' and a synthesis can be offered. The present work is an interdisciplinary approach that examines some aspects of high, formal, or learned culture. In Chile, as in any other national case, cultural production implies a specifi…
