  • The eviction room: How Carolina Maria de Jesus can help us analyze migration, segregation, and the politics of citizenship in the city

    Open Access•Diana Thomaz•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning C…•2024•References: 22

In this paper, I propose the “eviction room” as an analytical frame for the linked struggles of citizens and noncitizens living at the urban margins. The metaphor of the eviction room was coined by Carolina Maria de Jesus, a late Black Brazilian writer and favela dweller. De Jesus sees the city as a house: the city center is its luxurious living room; the favela, its eviction room, a precarious space to which the racialized urban poor are pushed …

  • Urban citizenship for all? Exploring the limits of an agenda in São Paulo’s squats

    Open Access•Diana Thomaz, Diana Zacca Thomaz•ARTICLE•Migration Studies•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 18

Scholarly analyses often interpret the urban struggles of both marginalised citizens and marginalised migrants through the single frame of urban citizenship. Urban citizenship, in this literature, is generally understood as an agenda that seeks to achieve the full political belonging of all those who inhabit the city. This article questions two assumptions running through much of this scholarship. The first is the assumption that struggles for ur…

  • What’s in a Category? The Politics of Not Being a Refugee

    Open Access•Diana Thomaz•ARTICLE•Social & Legal Studies•2017•Cited by: 16•References: 14

How are refugees perceived and governed in contemporary politics? What sort of sovereign responses has been advanced to govern and discipline the movement of people in a globalizing world? The article discusses how the ‘figure of the refugee’ (Scheel and Squire, 2014) or the ‘refugee label’ (Zetter, 1991, 2007) has changed once the Cold War ended and growing numbers of asylum seekers from the global South began searching for protection in the Nor…

  • The tactical politics of 'humanitarian' immigration: Negotiating Stasis, Enacting Mobility

Carolina Moulin Aguiar, Carolina Moulin et al.•ARTICLE•Citizenship Studies•2016•Cited by: 7•References: 17

Inspired by autonomy of migration and acts of citizenship literatures as frameworks for understanding migration, the paper analyzes the case of Haitian migrants in Brazil. It focuses, on the one hand, on the relational processes of constructing Haitian migrants as ‘humanitarian immigrants’ and, on the other, on the (im)perceptible tactics of survival and mobility enacted by them upon arrival. We argue that the ‘humanitarian immigrant’ label negot…
