This year we entered a new phase in the life of the Arctic Institute of North America.Included among the many new and exciting research and education initiatives is a transition to low-carbon operations. We have already begun this transition process at the Kluane Lake Research Station with the installation of solar power for lights and electric charging in the living quarters, and we continue to explore ways to decrease our fossil fuel consumption…

Acknowledging our Past Editor
I approach my first issue as editor of the journal Arctic with great trepidation, not only because this venerable publication has, for almost 80 years, published the works of some of the greatest Arctic scientists and social scientists, but also because I am following in the footsteps of Karen McCullough, an extraordinarily competent editor, whose example is simultaneously an inspiration and the source of my apprehension. Many of the journal's aut…
Topographic Analysis of the Dorset Occupation at Phillip's Garden, Northwestern Newfoundland: Implications for Dwelling Numbers, Forms, and Site Settlement
A topographic survey of the Dorset site Phillip’s Garden identified 183 surface features that potentially expand present understandings of social life at the settlement. Its long history of archaeological excavations focused on depressions observable on the ground surface. Excavation confirmed them as large dwellings, which became the basis for describing a unique settlement pattern at the site. This survey detected more subtle depressions and ot…
Priscilla Renouf Remembered: An Introduction to the Special Issue with a Note on Renaming the Palaeoeskimo Tradition
Arctic archaeology lost a great friend when Priscilla Renouf lost her battle with cancer on 4 April 2014. Priscilla devoted her career to understanding past human occupation on Newfoundland's Great Northern Peninsula, particularly at Port au Choix. She furthered our understanding of the Maritime Archaic, Recent Indian, Groswater, and Dorset occupations of the region, and her enthusiasm for the subject inspired many students to follow in her foots…
Dorset Sled-Shoe Design and Cold-Season Transport at Phillip's Garden (EeBi-1), Northwestern Newfoundland
The Dorset site of Phillip’s Garden (EeBi-1) in Newfoundland is unusual for its size, the distinct character of its settlement, and its rich material remains, including a wide range of osseous (bone, antler, and ivory) tools. This paper presents a comprehensive description of sled technology at the site through an analysis of sled shoes, their design, manufacture sequence, distribution, and the materials selected for their fabrication. The result…
