Similarities and Differences in Perceptions and Evaluations of the Communication Styles of American and British Mangers
American and British managers working in American companies in Britain were interviewed about issues associated with the workplace communication styles of themselves and the other group. They were asked to comment both descriptively and evaluatively about both similarities and differences. Transcripts were coded in terms of emergent themes. Results showed that the two groups were agreed about the existence and nature of differences. However, both…

Over the past 40 years in Britain, the differences in the overall life-chances of the highest and lowest strata of the class hierarchy have not reduced; this includes life-chances in education. Homelessness and strategies of identity maintenance
In order to investigate identity maintenance strategies used by a low status group, a covert participant observation study was conducted in a shelter for the homeless. Determinants of Gratitude Expressions in England
A field experiment (Study 1, N = 228) and a questionnaire study (Study 2, N = 120) were conducted to investigate determinants of gratitude expressions of British speakers. Based on Brown and Levinson's politeness theory, the main hypothesis was that the greater the giver's imposition in benefiting the receiver, the more polite the receiver's expression would be. Study 1 examined in four different situations participants' responses to a giver who …

This research focused on reactions to and evaluations of lies in public and interpersonal contexts. It was shown that people in general are not radical social constructionists; they endorsed the existence of false statements and claimed that lies were told more by some authorities and people than others. Some lies by authorities evoked reactions of amusement, and acceptability or indifference by up to half of the respondents, but most were judged…

The Tajfel‐Turner Theory of Social Identity was used as a framework from which it was predicted that pupils of low attainment in secondary school should come to define themselves as indifferent to or opposed to the values of their schools.
