Policies for young adults with reduced work capacity. Labour market impact in Sweden and Norway
The rising numbers of young people with disability pension concerns many advanced economies. We present results from a comparative analysis of the neighbouring countries Sweden and Norway on the impacts of differing policy mixes aimed at enhancing the employability of the work disabled. Using rich longitudinal data, we follow unemployed young adults (ages 25-29) with work-impairment up to four years after they became unemployed to investigate the…
Pressing the right button—labour market odds for youth with mental illness
Mental disorders threaten the chances of finishing secondary school and can hinder the school-to-work transitions of afflicted youths.Earlier onset depression predicts the chronicity, recurrence, and severity of episodes throughout life.Using rich, objective mental health data and a battery of variables covering personal and family characteristics, we investigate the impact of Norway's vocational rehabilitation programmes on youths aged 18-23 who…
Immigrant concentration and student outcomes in upper secondary schools
We analyse the effects of immigrant concentration on two measures of native students’ outcomes in upper secondary schools in Norway, completion and exam grades. Administrative data for full cohorts of new students 2002–2008 are employed. To take into account potential selection effects, we rely mainly on models with fixed school and educational programme effects. The analyses present a consistent picture: Immigrant concentration seems to have no …
Temporary Disability and Economic Incentives
We investigate the impacts of economic incentives on the duration and outcome of temporary disability insurance (TDI) spells. The analysis is based on a large quasi‐experiment taking place in Norway, involving a complete overhaul of the TDI benefit system. Our findings show that the labour supply of TDI claimants does respond to both the benefit level and the level of local labour demand. The estimated elasticity of the transition rate to employm…

Subsidizing "Stayers"? Effects of a Norwegian Child Care Reform on Marital Stability
Since January 1999, all parents in Norway with children aged 1 to 3 years who do not attend publicly subsidized day care are eligible for "cash-for-care" (CFC). One important purpose of the reform is to enable parents to spend more time with their children. We analyze whether the CFC reform has affected marital stability, using individual register data covering information on 130,265 observations of married couples. The results from both a natura…
